At Heritage, we believe that healthy people and healthy places go hand in hand—and that biodiversity plays a vital role in building stronger, more resilient communities. That mission came to life last week as Heritage President Ashley McLeod joined a panel at Sustain SC’s Biodiversity Day event held on May 22 in Columbia, SC.

The exclusive, members-only workshop—“The Economics of Biodiversity and Healthy Workplaces”—brought together state leaders in sustainability, health, and business to explore how biodiversity can be a driver of both human wellness and economic performance.
Ashley joined Dr. Susan Johnson, co-founder of the South Carolina Healthy Business Challenge (SCHBC) and Amanda Brooks, President of Catalyst Partners, for a timely conversation about the role of biodiversity in today’s workplace—and what it means for the future of South Carolina’s economy.
Connecting Biodiversity to Business Strategy
During the panel, speakers explored how biodiversity solutions aren’t just good for the planet—they’re essential for productivity, employee engagement, and long-term business resilience.
Key themes included:
- How biodiversity contributes to human health and economic productivity
- How employers can create nature-rich, high-performing environments
- The economic value of healthy buildings and green infrastructure
The conversation reinforced a message we’ve long believed at Heritage: when businesses invest in the natural environment, they invest in the wellbeing of their people and their communities.

Looking Ahead
We’re grateful to Sustain SC for convening such an important discussion—and to our fellow panelists for sharing their expertise and passion. Events like these remind us that biodiversity is not just an environmental concern—it’s a workforce and economic concern, too.
As we continue our work across South Carolina, Heritage is proud to lead by example and support solutions that bring people and nature back together—at work, in our communities, and beyond.
