Heritage recently completed phase one of a project for the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) in Columbia as part of a years-long process to create a wellness walking pathway stretching across the property.
MUSC came to Heritage with a goal of establishing an outdoor sitting area accessible for patients, hospital visitors, and staff members to enjoy while at the hospital. A peaceful greenspace like this can be a great resource for people who may be dealing with the loss of a loved one, a diagnosis, or just needing to get some space from the often overwhelming hospital environment.
The Project
The most recent project Heritage completed for MUSC is only about 20% of the hospital’s campus-wide initiative. Our team successfully converted an old parking lot into a beautiful space for visitors. MUSC selected the space because it would be the most convenient for most patients as it is close to the front entrance.
After milling out the existing parking lot and clearing the space for construction, our team worked on several tasks including:
- Redesigning the site irrigation system
- Inputting curb and gutter
- Pouring concrete for sidewalks
- Creating pathways
- Adding ADA parking
- Planting trees, shrubs and other plants
- Adding in benches and shade structures
- Implementing outdoor lighting features
MUSC’s Full Vision
While only a fraction of MUSC’s plans for the site, the complete project will eventually extend this garden into the larger parking lot. The wellness path will run alongside the perimeter of the lot and take you through the rest of the property.
